Fertility treatment has helped many couples who have struggled to become pregnant and realize their dreams of having children.

One of the first steps of fertility treatment is to undergo fertility testing to determine what may be preventing pregnancy. Sometimes, an underlying cause cannot be determined. This is called unexplained infertility. While it may sound scary, a diagnosis of unexplained infertility does not mean pregnancy isn’t possible. At the Fertility Center of San Antonio, we offer fertility treatment for unexplained fertility to patients in and around San Antonio, TX.

About Unexplained Infertility

Infertility is defined as not being able to get pregnant despite having unprotected sex around the time of ovulation for at least a year.

Infertility becomes classified as unexplained when fertility testing is unable to identify a likely cause of infertility.

A diagnosis of unexplained infertility does not mean that pregnancy is impossible and it does not necessarily mean that there’s a serious problem. It only means that the limitations of current fertility testing cannot pinpoint an issue that might be causing infertility.

Fertility Treatments Are Available for Unexplained Infertility

Even without a known cause of infertility, fertility treatments are still an option to help couples conceive.

Treatments at our San Antonio practice are tailored to the unique needs of each couple. Often a good starting point is trying the least invasive treatment first and then progressing if necessary.

Here are several treatments that may help couples with unexplained infertility become pregnant.

Lifestyle Changes

Making lifestyle changes may help reduce stress and improve health, both of which may help with fertility.

Some lifestyle changes to consider include practicing yoga or other mind-body exercises along with dietary changes to include more foods that are high in folate and folic acid.

Clomid

Some women with unexplained infertility may need help with ovulation. Taking Clomid®, a medication that stimulates follicle growth in the ovaries and triggers ovulation, is sometimes beneficial.

Clomid may be used alone or combined with other treatments to further increase the chances of conceiving.

Intrauterine Insemination

Intrauterine insemination (IUI) is performed by placing sperm directly into the uterus, close to the mature egg during ovulation. IUI helps increase the chance of conception by reducing the distance sperm must travel to reach the egg.

In Vitro Fertilization

In vitro fertilization (IVF) is a fertility treatment in which eggs are harvested from the woman and combined with sperm in a lab. Fertilized eggs are given several days to develop into embryos before being transferred into the woman’s uterus.

IVF can benefit those who have not successfully conceived with other less invasive treatments. Because egg and sperm are combined outside of the body, donor eggs or sperm may be used if so desired.

Intracytoplasmic Sperm Injection

Used as part of IVF, intracytoplasmic sperm injection (ICSI) allows a single sperm to be directly injected into an egg. ICSI may be a good option when semen analysis reveals low sperm count or other issues with sperm that may be affecting fertility.
