How Will Asherman Syndrome Affect My Pregnancy?

Asherman Syndrome is a rare gynecological disorder that is acquired after birth. The condition, also known as intrauterine adhesions, can interfere with the menstrual cycle and complicate a woman’s ability to become pregnant. If you have symptoms of this condition, the doctors at Fertility Center of San Antonio in San Antonio, TX, can diagnose and treat this disorder. Once you have recovered from the surgical treatment, our fertility experts will guide you through the fertility process so you can conceive and deliver a healthy baby.

Causes and Symptoms

Asherman Syndrome is a rare disorder. The condition results from the development of scar tissue along the walls of the uterus, often as the result of severe inflammation of the lining of the uterus (endometriosis). The syndrome may also result from past surgical scraping of the uterine wall or other forms of uterine surgery. A small number of cases have been tied to the use of IUD birth control devices.

Common symptoms of Asherman Syndrome include:

  • Reduced menstrual flow
  • Increased cramping
  • Abdominal pain
  • Cessation of menstrual cycles
  • Infertility

If you have experienced multiple miscarriages or have had difficulty conceiving, our team of San Antonio fertility experts can determine if Asherman Syndrome is the cause of your symptoms.

Diagnosis

Proper diagnosis of this syndrome requires an exam by an experienced fertility expert. The syndrome can be overlooked without the aid of a qualified physician. Our Medical Director, Dr. Joseph E. Martin, formed the fertility center over 30 years ago. He is one of the most respected fertility specialists in the field and a world-renowned embryologist. X-rays and the use of a hysteroscope can properly diagnose Asherman Syndrome. Other diagnostic procedures may include:

  • Hysterosalpingography (a type of x-ray)
  • Hysterosonogram
  • Transvaginal ultrasound examination
  • Blood tests

Treatment Options

Once Asherman Syndrome is diagnosed at our San Antonio fertility center, our doctors will work to restore your uterus to its normal shape and size. Hormonal therapy may be used to promote menstruation. The removal of lesions may require surgery. The scar tissue can often be removed using small, precise instruments that examine the uterus using a camera.

Our doctors have more than 30 years of experience helping patients who are struggling with infertility issues.

This minimally invasive approach allows for a shorter recovery period. To ensure that the adhesions do not return, the uterine cavity will need to be kept open while it heals. This can be accomplished through the placement of a small balloon inside the uterus for several days. Antibiotics can treat the presence of infections should they arise. Surgery can be a very effective means of treating Asherman Syndrome. Once the patient has recovered, the odds of conceiving and delivering a child are often much higher.
