Blastocyst Transfer Can Increase Your Chances of Becoming Pregnant

IVF is a combination of fertility procedures that maximize egg production, isolate quality sperm, and combine the egg and sperm outside the mother's body to achieve fertilization. Once mature eggs are fertilized with sperm, the healthiest embryos can be selected for transfer into the mother’s uterus. Depending on your specific needs and condition, the embryos can be transferred at different stages of development. A blastocyst transfer at our San Antonio fertility center describes planting the embryo during the blastocyst phase, which can improve its chances of implanting into the uterus’ lining. To find out if a blastocyst transfer is right for you, contact us today and schedule an initial consultation.

The Embryo Transfer Process

During the IVF procedure, the fertilization and first stages of embryo development occur outside of the mother’s body, which can allow for conception in spite of a variety of infertility factors. When healthy embryos are implanted on the third day following fertilization, each embryo’s chances of success is difficult to determine. Usually, two embryos will be transferred to improve the possibility of pregnancy. By allowing the embryos to reach the blastocyst stage, we can better determine which embryos are viable and more likely to fully develop into a fetus.

Should You Consider a Blastocyst Transfer?

If your prognosis is good for pregnancy through IVF, then you are likely a good candidate for a blastocyst transfer during your procedure. Since women produce fewer eggs as they grow older, your age will play a significant role in your eligibility for a blastocyst transfer. However, even older women may benefit from the procedure if their embryos are able to reach the blastocyst phase. Our highly experienced embryologist, Dr. Pool, will thoroughly examine your embryos and advise you on whether you should undergo a blastocyst transfer or a conventional embryo transfer.
